Information about the author Books "Practical Magic" Papus:

The real name Papus (Papus) is Gerard Anaclet Vincent Encausse. He was born July 13, 1865 in the Spanish city of La Coruna. When he was four years old, the family moved to Paris, where Gerard was educated. In his youth, he studied the Kabbalah, Taro, the work on magic and alchemy in the Paris National Library for a long time. The pseudonym "Papus", borrowed from "NukteMeron Apollonius of Tian" by Eliphas Levy, meant "the doctor". Which is not surprising, since Ancoss studied in medicine at the University of Paris, and in 1894 received a doctorate in medicine for his thesis on anatomy. On the Rhu Rhoden, a successful physician, who had extensive practice, opened his own clinic. But Gérard Ancoss became famous as the author of over 400 articles and 25 books on magic, Kabbalah and Tarot, published under the name Papus. He was considered a prominent figure in various occult organizations and the Parisian spiritualist and literary circles of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

As early as 1887 Papus entered the French Theosophical Society, which soon left - he was not satisfied with the fact that it focused all its attention on the eastern occultism.

In 1888 Papus, together with his friend Lucien Shamuel, founded the "Librarie du Merveilleux" (The wonderful bookstore) and began publishing his monthly magazine "L'Initiation" (Initiation), which was published before 1914.

In 1888, Papus, the Marquess of Saint-Ives (his mentor in the intellectual questions of the occult) and the Marquess of Gwait, together with Joseph Peladan and Oswald Wirth, founded the Kabbalistic Order of the Rose-Cross.

In 1891, Papus created the Order, based on two extinct Masonic rites, which became known as the Order of Martinists.

In 1893, Papus was one of the first to be ordained bishops of the Gnostic Church of France by its founder Julius Duanel, and in March of the same year he entered the Temple of Ahador of the Order of the Golden Dawn in Paris. Papus visited Russia three times (in 1901, 1905 and 1906) with lectures on magic and occultism. It is also known that he advised the last tsarist couple as a doctor and an occult adviser.

In 1907, Ankoss was among the founders of the Catholic Gnostic Church, a year later renamed the Ecumenical Gnostic Church.

June 24, 1908, Papus organized in Paris a congress of Freemasons and Spiritualists, called the "International Masonic Conference." In 1913, after the death of the famous mason John Yarker, Papus was elected as his successor in the position of the Great Hierophant (international chapter) of the Ancient and Common Rites of Memphis and Mizraim.

With the outbreak of the First World War, Ancoss joined the French Army Corps of War. Giving all the strength to the treatment of the wounded, he seriously fell ill and was forced to return to Paris. A few months later, on October 25, 1916, at the age of 51, he died of tuberculosis.
