- Azelaic acid - inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase, and as a result, melanocytes produce less pigment and the skin becomes lighter.
- Arbutin - found in large quantities in bearberry leaves. It inhibits the activity of tyrosinase and the synthesis of melanin in cells, without exerting a toxic effect on them.
